Roger Federer vs Rod Laver: Game Of The Greats

Roger Federer traded shots with his hero Rod Laver on Wednesday in the stadium that bears the Australian great's name.

The 17-times Grand Slam champion enjoyed a few rallies with the 75-year-old, who was dressed in traditional whites and impressed a packed crowd with his movement ahead of Federer's exhibition match with French world number 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
"Hitting with Rod Laver for me clearly is an absolute dream come true," Federer told reporters, "It's in his arena as well, it's named after him and he deserves it so much..
"While I was playing my racket was feeling extremely heavy, that means I was very nervous which I really was because you don't want to miss a shot.

"I was happy we had some rallies. What an honour it was for me and I hope that the crowd enjoyed it and I'm very thankful that he was willing to do something like this because it's not normal in any way and that's why I really appreciate it."
Later, Roger pleased the crowd with a 6-7(5) 6-3 7-5 win over Tsonga in the fund-raising event for his charity, the Roger Federer Foundation, on Wednesday, January 8th. Roger and Friends raised more than $1 million

"What a pleasure to play any match here, in particular a match for a good cause," said Federer. "I played some of the biggest matches of my career right here. It’s very special being back. It was a dream come true to play some balls with Rod Laver, spend some time with him, speak with him. The most important thing tonight was to enjoy it, have fun with Jo and get into the mood of the Australian Open.
"It's a pleasure playing the Australian Open. I’ve been coming for nearly 15 years. This was perfect preparation, but so much more tonight."

A Night With Roger Federer & Friends (starts at 4m00) - FULL Replay! (Thanks Australian Open!)

"I’m really pleased to be here tonight," said Tsonga, speaking to Hewitt. "To help Roger is always an honour. I played well. It was a good match tonight. It’s always tough to play against Roger. It’s great to be here tonight for a great cause."

The Golden Gate Bridge - Construction Of The Wonder (USA)

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States.

It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers.

The Frommers travel guide considers the Golden Gate Bridge "possibly the most beautiful, certainly the most photographed, bridge in the world".

It opened in 1937 and  until 1964 had the longest suspension bridge main span in the world, at 4,200 feet (1,280 m).

Before the bridge was built, the only practical short route between San Francisco and what is now Marin County was by boat across a section of San Francisco Bay.

Ferry service began as early as 1820, with regularly scheduled service beginning in the 1840s for purposes of transporting water to San Francisco.

Construction began on January 5, 1933. The project cost more than $35 million, completing ahead of schedule (by April 1937) and $1.3 million under budget. The Golden Gate Bridge construction project was carried out by the McClintic-Marshall Construction Co., a subsidiary of Bethlehem Steel Corporation.

Joseph Strauss was chief engineer in charge of overall design and construction of the bridge project.

Irving Morrow designed the overall shape of the bridge towers, the lighting scheme, and Art Deco elements such as the tower decorations, streetlights, railing, and walkways.

Senior engineer Charles Alton Ellis was the principal engineer of the project.
Ellis was also tasked with designing a "bridge within a bridge" in the southern abutment, to avoid the need to demolish Fort Point, a pre-Civil War masonry fortification.
He penned a graceful steel arch spanning the fort and carrying the roadway to the bridge's southern anchorage.
In May 2007, the Golden Gate Bridge District decided to give Ellis major credit for the design of the bridge.

The famous International Orange color was originally used as a sealant for the bridge. The US Navy had wanted it to be painted with black and yellow stripes to ensure visibility by passing ships.

The bridge-opening celebration began on May 27, 1937 and lasted for one week.

The day before vehicle traffic was allowed, 200,000 people crossed by foot and roller skates.

On opening day, Mayor Angelo Rossiand other officials rode the ferry to Marin, then crossed the bridge in a motorcade past three ceremonial "barriers", the last a blockade of beauty queens who required Joseph Strauss to present the bridge to the Highway District before allowing him to pass.

An official song, "There's a Silver Moon on the Golden Gate", was chosen to commemorate the event. Strauss wrote a poem that is now on the Golden Gate Bridge entitled "The Mighty Task is Done."

The next day, President Roosevelt pushed a button in Washington, D.C. signaling the official start of vehicle traffic over the Bridge at noon.

My Europe: Xanten - Ancient City Nowadays (Germany, Part II)

During my last visit to Europe, I was very lucky to visit one of the most beautiful sights in Germany, a small town called Xanten where my close friend lives. I would like to share my experience in pictures with you :)

Xanten is a historic town in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany, located in the district of Wesel.

Xanten is known for its Archaeological Park, one of the largest archaeological open air museums in the world, its medieval picturesque city center with Xanten Cathedral and many museums, its large man-made lake for various watersport activities as well as high standard of living.

It is visited by approximately one million tourists a year.

Big events include the Xantener Sommerfestspiele (a prestigious classical music festival lasting 2 weeks every summer), the annual Xantener Montmartrewhere artists from all over the world show their latest works as well as the annual German sandcastle-building championship.

The closest intercontinental airport is Düsseldorf International Airport (60 km)

Please visit town's official website for more information and guidelines.

P.S. Special thanks to my bestie Xenia and her family for the most wonderful time! :)
